QC Environmental Commitment

Queensland Cotton’s commitment is to design, develop and implement an environmental management system that assists us to mitigate any undesirable impact our actions have on the environment.  To uphold the Queensland Cotton commitment, all stakeholders will take collective responsibility for the effect of our work activities on the environment.  In support, Queensland Cotton will strive to:

  • Develop an environmental performance that strive to exceed meet legal requirements
  • Continually improve our impact on the environment
  • Comply with the best practice environmental standards
  • Monitor and communicate our environmental performance
  • Educate our people to be environmentally aware and to participate in our environmental management programs
  • Encourage environmental sensitivity in our contractors, partners and suppliers
  • Reduce and restrict the generation of waste products known to be deleterious to the environment, and where practical to use the waste management hierarchy (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Treat or Dispose)
  • Prevent and reduce the risk of emissions of pollutant substances in the event of incident or accident
     

Sustainability in Action

Working towards sustainability inside our offices:

  • Sustainable Shopping Bag offered as a gift for employees, contractors and growers for use in substitution of plastic/paper bags (Reducing our Individual Footprint)
     
  • Expanding Recycling program beyond paper and cardboard as currently, to include bottles/metal/plastic from cotton classing (seasonal)
     
  • In a process of creating  a Sustainability Policy and Committee structure to engage and drive local initiatives
     
  • Offering all our Australian sites who order stationery through our nominated supplier the opportunity to purchase at a reasonable price, 100% Recycled White Paper

Working towards sustainability on our land:

  • Investigation of options to implement Solar power in various areas (our offices, gins, as well as offer this extend this option to our employee’s house)
     
  • Working under Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) to analyze our Australian business to earn carbon credits by storing carbon or reducing greenhouse gas emissions on the land
     
  • Build a measurement for reduction of fuel, electricity and water consumption including an evaluation performance for each manager/business
